Edith Granger
(8 October 1869 - 17 September 1957)
Welcome to The Edith Granger Project. This website developed out of my research on Edith Lucy Granger (Hawkes), the first editor of An Index to Poetry and Recitations (now known as Columbia Granger's Index to Poetry). My research began in the summer of 2009 as part of a group project in the graduate course "Information Retrieval" in the Library and Information Science program at the University of Pittsburgh (Pittsburgh, PA).
My main role in the group was the biographical researcher. Starting out was slow and difficult as there was not much information on Edith readily available, but bits and pieces led to other bits and pieces. Much of my initial research came from the records of the Smith College Archives which has been an invaluable source for information on this Smith alumna.
I continued to research Edith's life after our group project was completed and I was excited each time I made a new discovery, big or small. And I am still making discoveries.
I believe that this information should be available to anyone who is interested in Edith's work and life and so I include my findings here on this website (I also wrote about my experience and starting a website on Edith for NMRT Footnotes).
There are some gaps in information and years of Edith's life I have not been able to account for so far. I also think there are many more poems she wrote that I have yet to find and I hope that they are not lost forever.
I plan to continue this research and update this website accordingly. Updates and dates those updates are made will be tracked on the Updates page going forward from the date this new version of this site was published.
